SEATTLE -- The Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association (WBBA) announces the confirmation of renowned keynote speakers, Rajiv Shah, M.D., Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and G. Steven Burrill, founder and CEO of Burrill & Company, a global leader in life sciences private equity, venture capital, merchant banking, and media as keynote speakers at the Life Science Innovation Northwest Conference, scheduled for March 16-17 at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center in Seattle. Rounding out the program are five panel discussions, ranging from partnering to capital structure, which will feature speakers from local life science companies, investment banking and venture capital firms, and regional media.
"We are thrilled to have such prominent keynote speakers kick off this year's conference," said Chris Rivera, President, WBBA. "Combined with a delegation from China, expert panel discussions, presentations from some of the regions' most innovative companies, as well as leading research and global health institutions like The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Pacific Northwest Labs and the University of Washington, Innovation Northwest promises to be the region's premier life science investor and partnering conference, and one that any serious life science investor, partner or executive should not miss."
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Shah was recently sworn in as the Administrator of USAID, which provides worldwide economic and humanitarian assistance. Shah has a long history in agricultural and healthcare service and policy. Previously Shah served as Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics and was Chief Scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) where he launched the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. He also held various positions in global health and development at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and provided healthcare policy advice for presidential and gubernatorial campaigns. Shah co-founded Health Systems Analytics and Project IMPACT for South Asian Americans and has served as an aide in the British Parliament and worked at the World Health Organization.
Mr. Burrill, who has devoted more than 40 years to helping life science companies launch operations and sustain growth in the face of an environment that is constantly and rapidly changing, is an internationally recognized spokesman and author for the life science and high technology industries. His keynote on the 'state-of-the-industry' is expected to draw from his strong ties with leading companies, CEOs, and promising technologies as well as Burrill & Company's latest annual report on the biotechnology industry, Biotech 2010, now in its 24th year.
Global Presence
Now in its tenth year, the conference has a new name and has expanded to attract an international audience. Formerly 'Invest Northwest,' the conference has been rebranded as the Life Science Innovation Northwest Conference to better identify and highlight the unique and powerful assets that define the Pacific Northwest's life sciences sector. In addition, the conference will provide opportunities to explore financial and strategic partnerships and investments with a delegation from China. Travis Sullivan, Director of Policy and Strategic Planning for the U.S. Department of Commerce, will discuss how the U.S. and the Pacific Northwest view green businesses and jobs, how they partner with China's Innovation industries, and Commerce's Trade and Promotion initiatives.
Connect with local companies
More than 60 Pacific Northwest companies will present the latest in biotechnology, diagnostic, global health, medical device, research, and other life science innovations. Attendees will include leaders from public and private life science companies, research institutions, entrepreneurs, and the global health community as well as media and investors.
Conference attendees have the opportunity to make the most out of their time by using www.biopartnering.com to plan their agenda and schedule one-to-one meetings with other attendees. BioPartnering, a powerful Internet tool created by Technology Vision Group, allows attendees to see who will be at the conference and contact each other via e-mail.
