VIC:Vic councils to choose own Melb Cup hols
In lieu of Melbourne Cup Day .. Victorian country councils will be able to choose their
own public holiday .. under new laws to be introduced into state parliament.
A law introduced by the former state government in 2008 banned half-day or part-shire
arrangements to substitute the public holiday.
But Services Minister LOUISE ASHER says agricultural and pastoral shows .. and regional
race days have suffered under those arrangements.
All Victorians in regional Victoria or metropolitan Melbourne will continue to receive
the same number of public holidays each year.
